Zimbabwe-born all-rounder Cartwright burst on to the scene in WA cricket during the 2012-13 season. Cartwright had been South Perth's First Grade top scorer in 2011-12 with 511 runs, before a century for the Sky Blues early in the 2012-13 season followed by an outstanding game for WA in the Futures League against Queensland, scoring two half-centuries and picking up a five-wicket haul, prompted his senior debut. Cartwright debuted for WA in the Ryobi One-Day Cup against Victoria in November 2012, before getting a taste of action in BBL|02 with the Perth Scorchers. Cartwright played three times for the Scorchers in BBL|02, top scoring against the Melbourne Stars and taking two important wickets in a win over Sydney Sixers. The all-rounder would also play two Bupa Sheffield Shield games and four Ryobi Cup matches during the 2012-13 campaign.
