Bancroft with an unbeaten knock of 87

Scorchers Find Their Sixth Sense

14 January 2019

The Scorchers have defeated the Sydney Sixers by seven wickets in their eighth match of their KFC Big Bash campaign, thanks to an inspired fightback by half-centurions Cam Bancroft and Ashton Turner.

The pair mounted a clinical 98-run partnership, with Bancroft’s Player-of-the-Match knock of 87* off 61 balls driving the side to an incredible victory at home in front of an orange sea of more than 30 thousand fans.

Matt Kelly starred with the ball, ripping through the Sixers’ top order with figures of 2-32 from his four overs.

AJ Tye (2-33) didn’t disappoint claiming the big scalp of Moises Henriques (38) and then Jordan Silk in quick succession.

Chasing a challenging total of 178, the Scorchers made their intentions clear from the outset racing to 1-59 at the end of the powerplay.

Bancroft was superbly supported by the skipper who smacked 60 off just 30 deliveries, and now slides into second place on the run-scoring ladder of BBL|08.

Turner said the team have gained much-needed momentum ahead of their next three games at home.

“The last couple of wins have been great and we’ve been able to shift that momentum. We’ve got a string of home games in a row now and we are going to really take that confidence with us and see how far we can run with it,” he said.

“Bancroft has done everything behind the scenes that other people don’t see. To us that have been around him for nine months it’s no surprise at all that he is producing performances like he is.

“It was a great wicket to bat on…it has a fast outfield and the ball comes onto the bat nicely with even bounce... I think it’s going to be a high-scoring ground for the rest of the tournament.”

The Scorchers take on the Hobart Hurricanes this Friday January 18 at Optus Stadium.
