Scorchers Singe Strikers With NYE Fireworks

31 December 2020

The Perth Scorchers have closed out the year with a bang, securing an emphatic seven-wicket victory over the Adelaide Strikers on New Year’s Eve at the Adelaide Oval.

A blazing start from Jason Roy helped the Scorchers to their first victory of their 2020-21 Big Bash campaign.

Chasing 147 to win, Roy blistered 49 from 32 balls as the Scorchers won the NYE clash with 14 balls to spare.

After winning the bat flip and electing to bowl, Perth's pace attack were quick to stifle the Strikers, Jhye Richardson finishing with figures of 3-19 from his four overs to be named Player of the Match.

Richardson and Aaron Hardie (2-21) dismissed opening pair Phil Salt (4) and Jake Weatherald (6) inside the first three overs to steal all momentum early.

The Strikers were 4-75 at the midway point of the innings but the wickets continued to fall with Richardson taking the huge scalp of Strikers’ skipper Alex Carey (82) in the 19th over.

Englishman Roy ensured the Scorchers' run chase was on track from the start.

Roy, who smashed seven fours and six, dominated a 57-run opening partnership with Liam Livingstone.

Josh Inglis looked at ease through the middle overs in a new-look role at number four, he smacked six boundaries on his 44*.

Mitch Marsh (38*) strode out to the middle with the game in the balance at 3-80 but showed his experience, combining with Inglis for an unbeaten partnership of 67 that sealed Perth’s first win of the season.

After the match, Mitch Marsh said;

“We’ve been close to putting together a full performance and tonight we did that.

“We’re absolutely pumped we’ve got a win for our fans, really hope they come out and support us.

“It’s been a tough year for a lot of people, we’re really hoping we can start 2021 with a few wins for the West Australians… hopefully we can do them proud.”

The Scorchers will travel to Perth tomorrow, ahead of their opening home match against the Melbourne Renegades on Sunday 3 January at Optus Stadium.
