Scorchers Singed By Sole Run

02 January 2019

The Perth Scorchers came painstakingly close to a fairy-tale finish at Spotless Stadium tonight, going down by one run to the Sydney Thunder during their KFC Big Bash league nail-biter.

Perth Scorchers skipper Ashton Turner almost steered the side to a victory against all odds after finishing 60 not out from 36 deliveries.

The Thunder won the toss and elected to bat first, and the Scorchers first highlight came in the third over when Jason Behrendorff pulled off a spectacular caught and bowled to dismiss Shane Watson for four.

Ashton Agar was best with the ball, claiming the scalps of Callum Ferguson and Joe Root on his way to 2-27 from four overs.

Jhye Richardson bowled with heat taking the big wicket of Jos Buttler (55) who managed to collect his own stumps to be out hit-wicket.

Chasing a target of 142, it was a slow and steady start for Perth who lost wickets in quick succession through the middle order as the Thunder tightened the clamps.

It came down to the late heroics of captain Aston Turner who’s batting performance provided a fighting chance for the visitors to win the match.

Needing 20 off the bowling of Daniel Sams, Turner took the margin to four off the last ball before he could only manage a two down the ground in Perth’s second straight loss.

“I felt in the game the whole time I was batting. It was really hard work and I was getting frustrated that I wasn’t able to find the fences as much as I would have liked to, Turner said.

“I knew if there was one over that I could get a few away it could’ve changed really quickly.

“In our top order and through the whole innings we saw it was really hard to hit boundaries and maybe we could have adjusted a little bit better, but I also think it was just really hard work out there.

“The job for us now is to find a way to swing around a little bit of momentum and string a few wins together and find a way to get into that top four at the end of the competition.”

The Scorchers host Brisbane Heat this Saturday 5 January at Optus Stadium.
