Maxy gets the perfect send-off

Super Send-Off For Scorchers Star

04 February 2019

The Perth Scorchers have secured an emotional 27-run victory over the Melbourne Stars tonight in what was a perfect send-off at home for their stalwart opening batsman Michael Klinger.

Klinger received a standing ovation from the home crowd after scoring a classy 30 runs, including three boundaries, to make him once again the all-time leading BBL run-scorer with 1,947 runs.

Ashton Turner provided the fireworks and smashed 69, including seven fours and three sixes to record his best score of the season and claim the Player of the Match honours.

Cameron Bancroft (44no off 27) produced an important knock to lift the Scorchers to their highest score of the season, 3-182.

Nathan Coulter-Nile came out firing with the ball returning 3-30 off his four overs.

The Scorchers applied the clamps when Andrew Tye (2-36 off 4) and skipper Mitch Marsh (1-26 off 3) took the big scalps of Glenn Maxwell (61) and Marcus Stoinis (49) respectively in the space of three balls.

The wickets continued to fall with Kelly producing a masterclass with the ball returning figures of 3-31 helping to restrict the Stars to 9-155 from their 20 overs.

An emotional Klinger said tonight’s game was very memorable and one he’ll never forget.

“It was really special. It was great to get a win, the boys carrying me off at the end and the round of applause from the crowd was something I will remember forever.”

“It was a great moment for the family, my dad and niece flew over from Melbourne, and Cindy was here with the kids. So to have them all here was really special.”

“Thank you to all the Perth Scorchers fans for your support, you made this night extremely special. I’m sure the Scorchers will be back bigger and better next season.”

The Scorchers (4-9) can avoid the wooden spoon by beating the Adelaide Strikers in their final match in Adelaide this Saturday.
