WA Cricket Participation Manager Fiona Cumming said Derek has achieved incredible outcomes for his school community through the cricket initiatives he’s led.
“Derek works hard to support the growth of cricket in the South West metro area by strengthening the school to club links and promoting opportunities for girls.
“He goes above and beyond to deliver a quality H&PE cricket program at his school that inspires and supports students to develop their skills and enjoy our great game.
“Derek has also been a valuable resource in coordinating and leading the cricket carnival for local schools and presenting at our Teacher PD day.
“Teachers are an important part of our cricket program delivery within schools and we are so grateful for Derek and all of the passionate teachers who have partnered with us as Perth Scorchers School Ambassadors to ensure their students have every opportunity to engage in sustainable, safe and organised physical activity in school and in the community.”
Derek was humbled to receive the award, and said he’s overarching goal is to encourage as many students as he can to love sport and all the benefits that come with it.
“It's very humbling to be awarded the WA Cricket School Ambassador of the term,” he said.
“I have found cricket to be a great sport to allow all students, no matter their level of ability, to see an improvement in their skills and gain a sense of achievement.
“It's fantastic Applecross Junior Cricket Club has fielded its inaugural female Under13s cricket side.
“As a Physical Education teacher my goal is to encourage a lifelong love of sport, movement and physical activity and having another side for our students to participate in on the weekends is awesome!”
