Grundy will join the Scorchers for the start of the WBBL|02 season in place of Shrubsole.

The Perth Scorchers have signed England international Rebecca Grundy for the first four Rebel Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) matches.

The left-arm spinner will take Anya Shrubsole’s spot in the team, with her compatriot not available to play until the Thursday 29 December clash with the Melbourne Renegades at Etihad Stadium.

Grundy has taken 20 wickets in 19 internationals for England and worked with Scorchers coach Lisa Keightley during her stint as assistant coach at Loughborough Lightning in the Women’s Super League last English summer.

The 26-year-old Grundy said playing in the WBBL was a very exciting opportunity for her.

“It was a bit of a shock to be honest, but I am absolutely thrilled with the chance to train and play with the Scorchers,” Grundy said.

“I’ve known Lisa for a while now, she actually identified me in England and put me forward for the Academy.

“To be a part of the WBBL is very exciting, the competition is leading the way in women’s cricket so to be involved in that is amazing.”

Grundy played for England in the last two ICC World Twenty20 tournaments, and brings plenty of experience to the youthful Scorchers squad.

Keightley said Grundy will provide competition for spots in the squad.

“We have a few good spinners in the team now, and her experience will be extremely valuable to the team,” Keightley said.

“Rebecca is very competitive and thrives off the contest and T20 cricket is a great format for that.”

The Scorchers fly to Sydney this week for the WBBL|02 opening weekend, with a double header against the Hobart Hurricanes on Saturday 10 December and Sunday 11 December.
