Kapp, Mills and Payne among latest Draft Nominations

The Big Bash League has today announced a new batch of world-class cricketers who have nominated for the upcoming Weber WBBL and KFC BBL Overseas Player Drafts. 

South African superstar and reigning Scorchers WBBL Player of the Year Marizanne Kapp will return to the competition, after spending her last two seasons with Perth.

The 33-year-old, along with New Zealand pair Sophie Devine and Maddy Green, are eligible to be retained by the Scorchers.

Kapp has flourished during her time with Perth, becoming a reliable allround contributor with both bat and ball. 

To date, Kapp has taken 24 wickets across her 28 matches and struck 335 runs at a strike rate of 125.46. 

She played a crucial role in the club's drought-breaking championship win in WBBL|07, including being named Player of the Match in the Final against Adelaide Strikers at Optus Stadium. 

The star allrounder maintained her form in WBBL|08 and was deservedly named as Scorchers WBBL Player of the Year. 

Accurate and versatile, Kapp finished WBBL|08 with the unrivalled economy rate of 5.74, despite frequently bowling with fielding restrictions in place.

The experienced South African allrounder collected 12 wickets 22.50 from 13 completed games, conceding more than six runs per over on just five occasions.

She was also Perth’s most destructive specialist batter when in full flight, recording the strike rate of 143.12.

Kapp’s season tally of 229 runs at 28.62 included her best WBBL score of 68 not-out from 34 deliveries against Melbourne Renegades.

Fellow Proteas players Laura Wolvaardt, Chloe Tryon, Nadine de Klerk, Anneke Bosch and Tazmin Brits have also put their hands up for selection in the inaugural WBBL Draft, as well as former South Africa player and captain Dane van Niekerk. Wolvaardt (Strikers), Tryon (Thunder) and de Klerk (Heat) are eligible for retention picks, while van Niekerk, Bosch and Brits can be picked up without retention by any club.  

On the men’s side, the KFC BBL Draft has a list of outstanding nominations, ensuring an electrifying season ahead.

Former Scorchers quicks Tymal Mills and David Payne have both nominated and are eligible to be retained by Perth, alongside dashing wicketkeeper bat Phil Salt, who missed the tournament last season due to injury after being originally drafted by Perth, championship-winning hero Laurie Evans and South African legend Faf Du Plessis. 

Payne played an important role in Perth's championship-winning run in BBL|12, taking 10 wickets in six matches at a tidy average of 17.1. 

He impressed on debut, taking the big wicket of Matthew Gilkes with just his second delivery in orange, finishing with the economical figures of 2-20 off his four overs. 

Mills, a fan favourite during his time with Perth in BBL|11, took 12 wickets in seven matches and consistently hit 145KMH with ball in hand. 

Sam Billings and David Willey are returning to the BBL Draft after both were selected as a first round Platinum pick last year. Billings was drafted by the Brisbane Heat at pick four, while Willey was selected by the Sydney Thunder at pick seven but withdrew ahead of the BBL|12 season. 

Ashes opening batter Zak Crawley, who scored an impressive 189 runs in the first innings of the fourth test, has nominated after making his first appearance in the BBL with the Hurricanes last season. Batting star Harry Brook, who recently set the record for the fastest century in The Hundred scoring 105 runs off 42 balls, has also put his name forward for selection. 

Joe Clarke (Stars), Will Jacks, Dan Lawrence, James Vince (Sixers), Tom Curran (Sixers), Ollie Pope, Gus Atkinson, Tom Banton (Heat) and Tom Kohler-Cadmore are also among the English talent hoping to be selected in the second BBL Overseas Player Draft.

The Weber WBBL and KFC BBL Overseas Player Drafts will be broadcast on Fox Cricket on September 3. The full list of players to nominate for this year’s Drafts will be announced next Monday August 28. The players selected for the Platinum category of each Draft will be announced Wednesday August 30.  

Retention Picks 

Players in both the WBBL & BBL Overseas Player Drafts will be an eligible retention player if they fit any of the following criteria: 

• Have been in a Big Bash team squad for a minimum of two seasons and haven’t been contracted to another team since 
• Have been in a Big Bash team squad the previous season 
• Was in a team squad last season but did not play in the starting 13 and have been approved by the Big Bash Technical Committee 
• Is otherwise approved by the Big Bash Technical Committee due to exceptional circumstances
