Scorchers Set Sights on Spring Challenge

Perth Scorchers’ preparations for an enormous Weber WBBL|11 campaign will ramp up in October when the second edition of the T20 Spring Challenge kicks off.

Starting 21 October, the tournament will be held in Sydney and features all eight Big Bash League franchises, as well as ACT Meteors.

The Scorchers are in action from 22 October, taking on Sydney Sixers at Cricket Central before playing Brisbane Heat at Blacktown International Sports Park the following day.

Their final two scheduled fixtures are against the Meteors (26 October, Drummoyne Oval) and Melbourne Stars (27 October, Blacktown International Sports Park), with the top four teams progressing to the semifinals at Cricket Central on 29 October.

The decider, also at Cricket Central, is on 30 October.

Hobart Hurricanes won the inaugural T20 Spring Challenge last year, defeating the Heat by five wickets.

Perth Scorchers General Manager – High Performance Cricket and Elite Teams, Kade Harvey, said the tournament was significant to the Scorchers’ WBBL planning.

“The Spring Challenge is an important competition for us, particularly in the way of planning for the WBBL in November,” Harvey said.

“Sometimes it takes a little time to jump between the 50-over and 20-over formats, so playing four games in six days before finals certainly helps with that process.”

The competition also provides less experienced players the chance to test themselves in conditions they don’t often face in Perth.

“It’s an opportunity for some of the younger players to acclimatise to conditions they might not be as familiar with,” Harvey said.

“The whole Women’s programme is hungry for success and they’ll be eager to set the tone in Sydney ahead of a big WBBL campaign.”
